23 February 2011

Today we received the best news yet...the VA has re-examined Nathan's case and they have determined that he will be considered HONORABLE for VA purposes, meaning that he is now eligible for all of his VA benefits! This is a huge blessing, and we cannot wait to give him the news when we see him tomorrow.

We still have some questions about whether this will benefit him now or when he's out of custody, but we know that many of you have been praying for him, and we wanted to pass on this piece of answered prayer.

Thanks again for your continued support! We'll let you know how our visits go this week.

The VA technically will not give veterans all of their benefits while incarcerated. They take away all but 10%, however an appropriation of his lost benefits will be awarded to any dependents. This would be children, wives etc. The VA must be notified of incarceration so as to not leave an over-payment of benefits. They start taking away benefits at 61 days after conviction. Then a prison re-entry person will start working with them close to their release time. When they enter a half way house or prison release facility, the VA needs to know because at that point their full benefits will be restored....
